Founding of World Economic Forum

January 1971

The World Economic Forum began as the European Management Forum, founded in January 1971 by Klaus Schwab, a professor of business at the University of Geneva, who invited European business leaders to the Swiss resort of Davos to learn about American management methods. It was renamed in 1987 and widened its scope to include politics. The annual meeting in Davos, held each January, brings together business executives, government leaders and academics, and informal meetings there have sometimes had diplomatic results, as when Greece and Turkey met in 1988 to avert a crisis. The forum is a Swiss non-profit foundation based near Geneva. It is also criticised as an elite gathering, and protests regularly accompany the meeting.
