The Japanese Red Army was a far-left militant group that grew out of the radical student movement in Japan in the late 1960s and aimed at a world communist revolution. Led by Fusako Shigenobu, it was based in Lebanon, in the Bekaa Valley, and worked with Palestinian groups, in particular the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Its members carried out attacks, including the 1972 shooting at Lod airport in Israel, which killed some twenty people, and several hijackings and hostage-takings. Its leaders were arrested or killed over the years, Shigenobu was arrested in Japan in 2000, and the group announced its dissolution in 2001.
