Establishment of Ichkeul National Park

18 December 1980

Ichkeul National Park, in northern Tunisia near Bizerte, is centred on a freshwater lake and surrounding marshes and the Jebel Ichkeul mountain. It is among the most important wintering sites for migratory waterbirds in the Mediterranean, attracting huge numbers of ducks, geese and coots, as well as greater flamingos on the way. It was made a national park in 1980, after being recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 and a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. In the 1990s the dams built on rivers feeding the lake raised the salinity and damaged its vegetation, and the site was placed on the World Heritage in Danger list for a time.
