Establishment of Triglav National Park

1981

Triglav National Park is Slovenia's only national park, and it covers much of the Julian Alps in the northwest of the country. It is named after Mount Triglav, the highest peak in Slovenia and a national symbol, which appears on the country's flag and coat of arms. The park's landscape includes limestone peaks, deep valleys, glacial lakes such as Lake Bohinj, and the turquoise Soca river. It shelters Alpine wildlife such as ibex, chamois, marmots and golden eagles, as well as many endemic plants. A small protected area had existed in the Alps since the 1920s, and the park was greatly extended to its present size in the 1980s. Hiking and mountaineering are popular.
