Founding of Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Persian Gulf

1981

The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Persian Gulf, usually called the Gulf Cooperation Council, was established in Abu Dhabi in May 1981. Its six members are Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman, which are monarchies with similar political systems and large oil and gas revenues. It was created at a time of regional insecurity, after the Iranian Revolution and as the Iran-Iraq War raged. The council has pursued economic integration, including a customs union, and military cooperation through a joint force. It has also been strained by disputes, such as the blockade of Qatar by several members from 2017 to 2021.
