Founding of Southern African Development Community

1980

The Southern African Development Community is a regional organisation of states in southern Africa, based in Gaborone, Botswana, that works to promote economic integration, development and political and security cooperation. It began in 1980 as a looser coordinating conference, the Southern African Development Coordination Conference, set up by the front-line states to reduce their dependence on apartheid South Africa. After the end of apartheid, it was reformed in 1992 as SADC and was joined by South Africa. It has sought to create a free trade area and has undertaken mediation in conflicts in the region, including in Zimbabwe and Madagascar.
