2016 United States presidential election

8 November 2016

The 2016 United States presidential election was held on 8 November 2016. The Republican candidate, the businessman Donald Trump, who had never held elected office, defeated the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, a former secretary of state, in the Electoral College, even though Clinton received about three million more votes nationwide. Trump's victory was decided by narrow margins in the states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, which had previously voted Democratic in presidential elections. The campaign was marked by controversies over Clinton's use of a private email server and by Russian interference in the election, which was later examined by a special counsel. Trump took office in January 2017 with Mike Pence as vice president.
