Discovery of S/2004 S 12

12 December 2004

S/2004 S 12 is a small moon of Saturn, known by a provisional designation which shows that it was first found in 2004. It is only a few kilometres across and moves on a distant, tilted orbit, like many of the planet's faint outer satellites. It was discovered by a team of astronomers led by Scott Sheppard that was using large ground-based telescopes to search for irregular moons. Moons of this kind are generally believed to be captured bodies or fragments of larger ones. It had not been given a formal name when this entry was compiled.
