Discovery of Farbauti

12 December 2004

Farbauti is a small irregular moon of Saturn, only a few kilometres in diameter, that follows a distant and eccentric orbit around the planet. It was found in images taken in late 2004 by a team led by Scott Sheppard, working with telescopes on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, and its discovery was announced in 2005. It is part of the Norse group of moons, which move in the direction opposite to Saturn's rotation and are thought to be fragments of a larger body captured by the planet. The moon is named after Farbauti, a giantess in Norse mythology and the mother of Loki.
