Swat District

14 October 1969

Swat District is an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of northern Pakistan, which formed when the former princely state of Swat was merged into Pakistan. The valley has a long history as a centre of Buddhism in ancient Gandhara, with rock carvings and monasteries, and was later ruled by the Wali of Swat, whose state was integrated in the late 1960s. Its mountains, rivers and orchards made it a popular tourist destination, sometimes called the Switzerland of the East. Between 2007 and 2009, Taliban militants took control of much of the area, until a military operation in 2009 restored government rule. Mingora, the largest city, was the home of the education campaigner Malala Yousafzai.
