Discovery of 55 Cancri c

13 June 2002

55 Cancri c is one of five known planets orbiting the Sun-like star 55 Cancri, a binary system about 41 light-years away in the constellation Cancer. It was discovered by astronomers using the radial velocity method, which detects the tiny wobble that a planet's gravity causes in its star. It has a mass of roughly half that of Saturn and circles its star in about 44 days. The 55 Cancri system was one of the first found to contain multiple planets, and its innermost planet is a hot super-Earth that has been studied in detail. In 2015 the International Astronomical Union gave the planets proper names, and planet c was named Brahe, after the astronomer Tycho Brahe.
