Release of Kazakh Wikipedia

3 June 2002

The Kazakh-language edition of Wikipedia opened in June 2002, early in the growth of Wikipedia beyond English. Kazakh is the official language of Kazakhstan and is a Turkic language, and for many years it was written in the Cyrillic alphabet, with Latin and Arabic scripts in use in other places. This led the edition to adopt a way of showing articles in different alphabets, which helped readers in Kazakhstan, China and elsewhere. Kazakhstan has been planning a gradual shift of the Kazakh alphabet from Cyrillic to Latin, which adds to the interest of the project. The edition is maintained by volunteers and has grown into a substantial reference in the language.
