Construction of Leicester City Stadium

23 July 2002

The King Power Stadium is a football stadium in Leicester, England, and the home ground of Leicester City. It opened in the summer of 2002 as the Walkers Stadium, replacing the club's old ground at Filbert Street, and it holds about thirty-two thousand people. It was renamed after the Thai duty-free company King Power when the club was bought by its owners in 2010. The stadium saw Leicester win the Premier League in 2016 against odds of five thousand to one, an outcome widely regarded as one of the greatest surprises in sporting history. In 2018 the club's owner, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, died with four other people in a helicopter crash just outside the ground.
