Release of Latin Wikipedia

June 2002

The Latin-language edition of Wikipedia is written entirely in Latin, a language no longer spoken as a native tongue, and so it differs from most other editions. It opened in 2002, in the first years of the project's expansion into many languages. Its contributors are mostly enthusiasts, teachers and students of classical languages, who have to invent or adapt Latin words for modern concepts such as the computer or the aeroplane. This makes the project a lively experiment in how a classical language can be used to describe the modern world. It is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation and remains a small but active edition, used as a learning aid and a showcase for living Latin.
