Death of Marlon Brando

1 July 2004

Marlon Brando died on 1 July 2004 in Los Angeles, aged 80. An American actor, Brando transformed screen acting in the 1950s with an intense, naturalistic style rooted in the Method. After success on Broadway in A Streetcar Named Desire, he repeated his role as Stanley Kowalski in the 1951 film, and he won an Academy Award for On the Waterfront. His portrayal of Vito Corleone in The Godfather brought another Oscar in 1973, which he declined, sending an activist to protest the treatment of Native Americans in Hollywood. Other roles include Last Tango in Paris and Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now. His later years were marked by personal tragedy and a reputation for difficulty on set.
