MESSENGER was a NASA space probe that explored Mercury, launched in August 2004. It made flybys of Earth, Venus and Mercury itself, using gravity to slow down for its journey, and in March 2011 it became the first spacecraft to orbit the planet. Over four years it photographed the whole surface, measured the magnetic field and the composition of the crust, and found water ice in permanently shadowed craters at the poles. The mission also showed that Mercury's surface has more volatile elements than expected. After its fuel ran out, MESSENGER was deliberately crashed into the planet in April 2015.
