Discovery of S/2004 S 4

21 June 2004

S/2004 S 4 is a provisional designation given to a possible small moon or ring feature seen in images taken by the Cassini spacecraft shortly after its arrival at Saturn in 2004. The label shows that Saturn is the planet and that the object was one of several candidates logged in that year, but it was never confirmed as a permanent satellite. Such objects near Saturn's rings are often clumps of material that come and go, which makes them difficult to follow. It belongs to the early discoveries of the Cassini mission.
