John F. Kennedy died on 22 November 1963 in Parkland Memorial Hospital, aged 46. An American Democratic politician, Kennedy served in the Navy in the Second World War, where he commanded a patrol torpedo boat, before being elected to the House of Representatives and the Senate from Massachusetts. In 1960 he won the presidency by a narrow margin and became, at forty-three, the youngest elected president and the first Roman Catholic. His administration saw the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, the founding of the Peace Corps and the commitment to land a man on the Moon. He proposed civil rights legislation. He was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, and Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the murder.
