Doctor Who is a British science fiction television series that premiered on the BBC on 23 November 1963. It follows the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, a ship that looks like a police box, usually with human companions. The original concept came from the BBC's head of drama Sydney Newman, and the first actor to play the lead was William Hartnell. When an actor left, the character was explained to regenerate into a new form, which allowed the show to continue for decades. The original series ended in 1989, a television film followed in 1996, and the show returned in 2005. It is among the longest-running science fiction series in the world.
