First edition of Venice Film Festival

1932

The Venice Film Festival, held on the Lido, is the oldest film festival in the world. The first edition took place in the summer of 1932 as part of the Venice Biennale, the arts exhibition, organised by Giuseppe Volpi, Luciano De Feo and Antonio Maraini, and its first screenings were held on the terrace of the Hotel Excelsior. In the early years it ran under the Fascist government, and prizes were sometimes awarded for political reasons. After the Second World War the festival was reorganised, and from 1949 its main prize has been the Golden Lion. It takes place each year at the end of the summer, and together with Cannes and Berlin forms a trio of the leading European festivals. It has often been a launch pad for films competing in the Oscar season.
