Construction of Frankfurt Airport

8 July 1936

Frankfurt Airport, officially Rhein-Main, opened for traffic in July 1936 on the edge of Frankfurt, serving at first both airships and aeroplanes. The Graf Zeppelin and later the Hindenburg used its airship facilities. After the Second World War the site was taken over by the United States forces and played an important role in the Berlin Airlift of 1948 to 1949. Civilian air traffic later resumed, and the airport grew rapidly, with a first major terminal opening in 1972 and a second in 1994. Today it is the largest airport in Germany and one of the busiest in Europe, with Lufthansa operating its main hub there. It is also a major cargo centre.
