Construction of Ben Gurion Airport

April 1937

Israel's main international airport lies near Lod, south-east of Tel Aviv. Its origins go back to an airfield built in the British Mandate period, when it was known as Lydda Airport and served as a link on imperial air routes. After 1948 it was taken over by the new state of Israel and gradually expanded, becoming the country's principal gateway for travellers. In 1973 it was renamed after David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first prime minister. It has been the scene of several attacks, including a massacre by Japanese Red Army gunmen in 1972, and today it is among the more tightly secured airports in the world.
