Chiang Kai-shek died on 5 April 1975 in Taipei, aged 87. A Chinese military and political leader, Chiang rose to prominence in the Kuomintang after the death of Sun Yat-sen. He led the Northern Expedition of 1926 to 1928 that nominally reunified China under a Nationalist government in Nanjing. His forces fought the Chinese Communists and, after 1937, Japan, and China became one of the Allied powers in the Second World War. After losing the civil war to Mao Zedong, he retreated to Taiwan in 1949 and ruled the island under martial law as president of the Republic of China until his death. His government was authoritarian and repressed dissent, though Taiwan's economy grew rapidly under his leadership.
