The Cambodian genocide was carried out by the Khmer Rouge regime led by Pol Pot after it took power in Phnom Penh in 1975. The regime tried to build a radical agrarian communist society, emptied the cities, abolished money, schools and religion, and forced people into labour on farms and building projects. Hundreds of thousands were executed, including at the Tuol Sleng prison, and many more died of starvation, disease and overwork, with total deaths often estimated at around one and a half to two million. The regime was overthrown after a Vietnamese invasion, and later a tribunal convicted several of its leaders.
