Founding of European People's Party Group

23 June 1953

The European People's Party Group is the centre-right group in the European Parliament, drawing its origins from the Christian Democratic Group formed in the Common Assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community, the first parliamentary body of European integration. It brought together Christian democratic politicians from founding states such as Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, who were committed to European unity. The group expanded as new members joined, and in the 1990s conservative parties from several countries joined it. It has been the largest group in the Parliament since 1999, with parties such as Germany's CDU and CSU, and has supplied several presidents of the European Commission.
