Construction of Yad Vashem

19 August 1953

Yad Vashem is the Israeli institution that commemorates the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. It was established by an act of the Knesset in 1953 and stands on the Mount of Remembrance in Jerusalem. Its name comes from a verse in the Book of Isaiah and means a monument and a name. The complex includes a museum of history, a hall of names, archives with millions of documents, a research institute and an education center. It also runs a program to honor non-Jews who risked their lives to rescue Jews, called the Righteous Among the Nations.
