Benazir Bhutto was born on 21 June 1953 in Karachi. A Pakistani politician, Bhutto was the daughter of Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was executed under military rule in 1979. Educated at Harvard and Oxford, she led the Pakistan Peoples Party and in 1988 became prime minister, the first woman to head the government of a Muslim-majority country. She served until 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996, and both governments were dismissed amid allegations of corruption, which she denied. After years in exile she returned to Pakistan in October 2007 to contest elections. She was assassinated in a gun and suicide attack in Rawalpindi on 27 December 2007.
