Herta Müller was born on 17 August 1953 in Nițchidorf. A German-Romanian novelist, poet and essayist, Müller was born in the Banat region of Romania, in a German-speaking minority community. She worked as a translator in a factory until she was dismissed for refusing to collaborate with the Securitate, the secret police of Ceaușescu's regime, and her early books were censored. She emigrated to West Germany in 1987. Her works, including Nadirs, The Land of Green Plums and The Hunger Angel, depict life under dictatorship, persecution and exile in dense, poetic prose. In 2009 she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for portraying the landscape of the dispossessed.
