Creation of watchOS

24 April 2015

WatchOS is the operating system that runs on the Apple Watch, made by Apple and based on the same core as its iPhone operating system, iOS. It was released along with the first Apple Watch, which was announced in 2014 and went on sale in 2015. The system provides watch faces, notifications, health and fitness tracking, apps and contactless payments with Apple Pay. Over the years it has added features such as sleep tracking, an electrocardiogram app, fall detection, and cellular connectivity, and apps that run independently of an iPhone. Apple updates watchOS each year, usually announced in June and released with new watches in the autumn.
