Germanwings Flight 9525

24 March 2015

Germanwings Flight 9525 was a scheduled flight from Barcelona to Düsseldorf operated by an Airbus A320. The aircraft began a steady descent after reaching cruising altitude and flew into a mountainside in the French Alps, killing all 150 people on board. Investigators concluded that the co-pilot, Andreas Lubitz, had locked the captain out of the cockpit and deliberately set the plane to descend. He had a history of mental health problems that he had hidden from his employer. The crash led aviation authorities in Europe to require two authorized people to be in the cockpit at all times and prompted debate on pilot screening and medical privacy.
