Release of Discord

13 May 2015

Discord is a free messaging and voice chat service released for gamers who wanted a low-latency alternative to tools such as Skype, TeamSpeak and Mumble. It was created by Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy, founders of the game studio Hammer & Chisel, after their game Fates Forever struggled commercially and they reused its chat technology. Users organize themselves in servers made of text and voice channels with roles and permissions, and the service runs in browsers and on desktop and mobile apps. Discord grew far beyond gaming in the early 2020s, becoming a home for study groups, artists' communities and open-source projects. The company attracted large investments, and a reported acquisition offer from Microsoft in 2021 was declined.
