2015 United Kingdom general election

7 May 2015

The 2015 United Kingdom general election was won by the Conservative Party under David Cameron, who unexpectedly secured an outright majority in the House of Commons after five years of coalition with the Liberal Democrats. Opinion polls had suggested a hung parliament. The Scottish National Party swept almost all seats in Scotland, reducing Labour there to a single seat, and the Liberal Democrats were reduced to eight seats. The UK Independence Party won about an eighth of the votes but only one seat, which showed how the first-past-the-post system can distort results. Labour leader Ed Miliband resigned. The Conservative manifesto had promised a referendum on membership of the European Union, which was held in 2016 and led to Brexit.
