Founding of Shanghai Stock Exchange

1990

The Shanghai Stock Exchange is one of the two main stock exchanges in mainland China, along with the one in Shenzhen. It was re-established in 1990 after decades without a stock market under communist rule, and trading began in December of that year with a small number of listed companies. The exchange has since grown enormously and lists many of China's largest state-owned companies, including banks and energy groups. Foreign investors have only gradually been allowed access, through schemes such as the Stock Connect program with Hong Kong. It has a Science and Technology Innovation Board, known as the STAR Market, created in 2019 for young technology firms.
