Construction of Toronto Pearson International Airport

1939

Toronto Pearson International Airport is the busiest airport in Canada, located in Mississauga, west of downtown Toronto. It began as a small airfield named Malton Airport, opened in the late 1930s, and it grew rapidly after the Second World War. It was renamed in honour of Lester B. Pearson, the Canadian prime minister and Nobel Peace Prize winner, in 1984. The airport is the main hub of Air Canada and an important connection point between North America, Europe and Asia. A large new Terminal 1, designed by the architect Moshe Safdie, opened in the early 2000s, and the airport continues to expand.
