The national anthem of Thailand, called Phleng Chat Thai, has its origin in the period after the revolution of 1932 that ended absolute monarchy in Siam. Its music was composed by Phra Chenduriyang, a Thai musician of German descent, and the first lyrics were replaced by new words in 1939, written by Luang Saranupraphan, when the country's name was officially changed from Siam to Thailand. The text expresses the unity and the sovereignty of the Thai people. By custom, the anthem is played on radio and television and in public places twice a day, at eight in the morning and six in the evening, and people stop to stand in respect. A separate royal anthem is used for ceremonies involving the monarch.
