Construction of Berlin-Tegel Airport

1939

Berlin Tegel Airport, formally named after the aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal, was an airport in the north-west of Berlin that grew from a former military ground. During the 1948 Berlin Airlift, French forces and thousands of Berliners built its first long runway within a few months to supply the blockaded western sectors. It became the main gateway of West Berlin, known for its hexagonal terminal designed by Meinhard von Gerkan, which let passengers walk only a short distance from the check-in to the aircraft. After German reunification it handled most of the city's traffic, while the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport suffered years of delays. Tegel finally closed in November 2020, and its site is being redeveloped.
