Founding of Marvel Comics

1939

Marvel Comics is an American publisher of comic books, based in New York, which began as Timely Comics and introduced characters such as Captain America and the Human Torch in the early years of the Second World War. In the 1960s, writer Stan Lee and artists such as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko created a new generation of superheroes with personal flaws, including Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, the X-Men and Iron Man. The company went through bankruptcy in the 1990s and was bought by Disney in 2009. Marvel Studios has since turned its characters into the highly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe of films.
