Construction of Øresund Bridge

1 July 2000

The Oresund Bridge connects Copenhagen in Denmark with Malmo in Sweden, carrying both a motorway and a railway across the Oresund strait. It is part of a fixed link that combines a cable-stayed bridge on the Swedish side with an artificial island, Peberholm, and an undersea tunnel on the Danish side, since a bridge there would have interfered with aircraft approaching Copenhagen airport. Queen Margrethe II and King Carl XVI Gustaf took part in the opening. The link has made commuting between the two countries common and has helped to integrate the region around the two cities, and it inspired the Scandinavian television series The Bridge.
