Founding of East African Community

7 July 2000

The East African Community is an intergovernmental organisation of countries in East Africa, with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania. An earlier community of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda was formed in 1967 and collapsed in 1977 over political and economic disagreements. The present community was relaunched with a new treaty that came into force in July 2000, and it has since added Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia as members. It has set up a customs union and a common market, and it aims at a monetary union and eventually a political federation. Its work includes trade, infrastructure and cooperation on security.
