Creation of Windows Mobile

19 April 2000

Windows Mobile was a family of operating systems that Microsoft developed for smartphones and personal digital assistants. It grew out of Windows CE and the Pocket PC platform, and it was released in various versions, with a layout resembling the desktop version of Windows, a Start menu and stylus-based controls. It was widely used on devices from makers such as HTC, Dell and Palm in the 2000s, and it supported Office apps and corporate email. It lost ground after the arrival of the iPhone in 2007 and of Android, and Microsoft replaced it with Windows Phone, which itself was discontinued in the late 2010s.
