Tan Son Nhat International Airport serves Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, in southern Vietnam. A small airfield was built on the site in the early 1930s by the French colonial authorities in Indochina, and was gradually extended. During the Vietnam War it became one of the busiest airports in the world, serving as a major base for the South Vietnamese and United States air forces as well as for civilian traffic, and was attacked during the final fall of Saigon in April 1975. After reunification it became a civilian airport again, and it is now the busiest airport in Vietnam. Its name comes from the nearby district of Tan Son Nhat. A large new airport at Long Thanh in Dong Nai province is being built to relieve it.
