Construction of Orly Airport

1932

Orly Airport is the second-busiest airport of Paris, lying about thirteen kilometers south of the city center. It began as an airfield in the early 1930s and was used by the military, including during the German occupation in the Second World War. After the war it grew quickly into the main international airport of Paris, and in the 1960s a new terminal was opened by President Charles de Gaulle. Charles de Gaulle Airport took over most long-distance traffic from 1974, and Orly now serves mostly domestic, European and some intercontinental flights. It is named after the nearby town of Orly.
