Construction of Manchester Airport

1929

Manchester Airport, originally known as Ringway, is the largest airport in the north of England and the third busiest in the United Kingdom after Heathrow and Gatwick. It opened in the late 1930s and, during the Second World War, was used by the Royal Air Force, including as a training base for paratroopers and for aircraft production. After the war it developed as a civil airport and grew rapidly with the growth of package holidays and international services. It has two runways and three terminals, and it is connected to the city by rail and tram. The airport is owned by a group of local authorities in Greater Manchester together with an investment partner.
