Founding of La Liga

1929

La Liga is the top level of professional men's football in Spain. The competition began in the 1929 season, after years in which the Spanish champion had been decided in a cup tournament, and it brought together ten clubs in a single league. Barcelona won the first title. Real Madrid and Barcelona have dominated the league ever since, accounting for most of the championships, with Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and Valencia among the other winners. The league has attracted many of the world's best players and sells its broadcasting rights around the world. It is organised today by an association of the clubs themselves under the name LaLiga.
