Construction of Khalifa International Stadium

3 March 1976

Khalifa International Stadium is a multi-purpose sports venue in Al Rayyan, in the Doha area of Qatar, which has served as the country's national stadium. It was inaugurated in the mid-1970s and used for football and athletics, including the 2006 Asian Games. A major renovation before the 2022 World Cup added a modern cooling system, a new roof structure and better seating, and its arch has become a recognizable symbol of Doha. The stadium hosted the 2019 World Athletics Championships and several matches of the 2022 World Cup, including the third-place play-off between Croatia and Morocco. It is named after Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, the emir who was in power at its opening.
