Corazon Aquino was born on 25 January 1933 in Paniqui. A Filipina politician, Aquino became president of the Philippines in 1986 after the People Power Revolution, which ended the long rule of Ferdinand Marcos. She was the widow of the opposition leader Benigno Aquino Jr., who was assassinated at Manila airport in 1983 on his return from exile, an event that galvanized the opposition. She ran against Marcos in a snap election marred by fraud allegations, and mass protests and defections by the military forced him to leave. As president she restored democratic institutions and oversaw a new constitution, while surviving several coup attempts. She did not seek a second term.
