Construction of Ellis Park Stadium

1928

Ellis Park Stadium is a large sports stadium in Johannesburg, mainly used for rugby union and football. It is best known as the venue of the 1995 Rugby World Cup final, in which South Africa beat New Zealand, with President Nelson Mandela presenting the trophy in a Springbok shirt, an event seen as a moment of national unity after apartheid. The stadium was renovated and expanded for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, at which it staged several matches. It is a home of the Lions rugby team and has also staged football derbies between the Soweto clubs Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. In 2001 a crush before one such match killed dozens of spectators, a disaster that led to changes in safety measures.
