Construction of Burj al-Arab

1 December 1999

The Burj Al Arab is a luxury hotel in Dubai, opened in December 1999. It stands on an artificial island about 280 metres from the shore of Jumeirah Beach and is linked to the mainland by a curved causeway. The building, designed by the British architect Tom Wright of the firm Atkins, rises to about 321 metres and has a profile that looks like the sail of a traditional dhow, covered with a fabric screen of Teflon-coated glass fibre. All of the rooms are suites on two levels. It is often described in the press as a seven-star hotel, which is not an official rating. The Burj Al Arab became an emblem of Dubai's rapid rise as a centre of tourism and business.
