Founding of ExxonMobil

30 November 1999

ExxonMobil is an American multinational oil and gas company with headquarters in Texas, and one of the largest publicly traded energy firms in the world. It traces its roots to John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil, which was broken up by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1911 into separate companies, among them Standard Oil of New Jersey, later Exxon, and Standard Oil Company of New York, later Mobil. Exxon and Mobil merged in 1999 to form the present company. It explores for and produces oil and natural gas on several continents and operates refineries and chemical plants, and it has often been at the center of public debate over climate change and environmental accidents such as the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989.
