Happy Tree Friends is an animated comedy series that began on the internet as a Flash cartoon and later appeared on television. It stars cute cartoon animals, such as Cuddles, Giggles, Toothy and Lumpy, who live in a brightly coloured world and regularly meet violent and gory deaths in absurd accidents. This contrast between the sweet style and the graphic content is the basis of its dark humour. Episodes have no dialogue, relying on sound effects and visual gags. The show was produced by the studio Mondo Media, was popular online in the early 2000s, and gained a cult following, though its violence made it controversial and led it to be aimed only at adult audiences.
